Taling Ngam Beach
2 km of fine white sand with some darker patches
Taling Ngam Beach represents Koh Samui's most remote and pristine major beach, located on the island's southwest coast. The southwest-facing orientation provides dramatic sunset vistas, enhanced by elevated hillside perspectives and panoramic views of the iconic Five Islands (Koh Ha, also called Five Sisters). Kayak trips and longtail boat excursions to the islands are available from the beach.
The beach features coarse, yellow-brown sand along its length. The remote location means genuine solitude is easily found, though sections near resorts like Conrad Koh Samui and Am Samui Resort get busier during high season (December–April). The most secluded stretches are between resort properties. Luxury resorts provide upscale dining options — Essence, EVA Cafe, and Jahn are well-regarded beachfront restaurants.
Swimming conditions are generally calm with shallow, warm water. However, the seabed is rocky with coral fragments and sea urchins in places. Water shoes are strongly recommended, especially at low tide when stones and reef are exposed. Watch your footing when entering and exiting the water.
At low tide, the shallow water recedes to expose stones, mud patches, and reef fragments along sections of the beach. Check tide times — high tide offers the best swimming conditions and the most attractive waterfront.
Casual snorkelling is possible near small reef patches close to shore, but this is not a dedicated snorkelling destination. Visibility varies and the experience is modest compared to sites like Ang Thong or Koh Tao. Kayaking along the coastline and fishing trips are popular alternative water activities.
Sunbeds, umbrellas, and beachfront dining are available through the resorts along the beach, but there are limited public facilities. Independent visitors should bring their own supplies.
Accessible by car or motorbike along Route 4170, the area is remote by Samui standards — taxis and songthaews may need to be pre-arranged for the return journey rather than hailed on the spot.
During the rainy season (May–October), the west-facing coast can experience stronger waves and currents. Swimming conditions are best during the calm season (December–April).
The Na Muang Waterfalls (Na Muang 1 and Na Muang 2) are a short drive inland from Taling Ngam — a popular half-day pairing with a beach visit. The nearby Wat Kiri Wongkaram temple is also worth a visit. The surrounding headlands offer hiking opportunities with spectacular views, and the elevated vantage points above the beach are among the best sunset viewpoints on the island.
