About Wat Phra Yai

Wat Phra Yai is an active Buddhist temple centred on a 12-metre golden seated Buddha in the Mara posture. The statue stands on Koh Fan, a small island linked to Koh Samui by a short causeway, near Choeng Mon Beach. Visitors climb a naga-lined staircase to the elevated shrine platform, which looks across the Gulf of Thailand towards nearby islands. The grounds include smaller Buddha images, offerings and stalls selling amulets, religious items, clothing and souvenirs. It is a place of worship as well as a landmark, with a quieter, more devotional atmosphere in the early morning. Modest clothing is expected, and shoes are removed before entering shrine areas.
